Bonsai!!!!

My brother Zack wore soft cap… a light tan/grey hat with a bonsai tree on it. I am sure he got it from my father who got it from a friend who creates those masterful pieces of nature. I tried once and failed miserably, but that’s not the point. Each summer my brother worked in Lake George as a carriage driver on one of those horse and buggies like they have in all tourist areas. He loved the horses but hated the people… that was him.

One day Ralph Macchio, the Karate Kid himself, got on for a ride… with my brother adorning the hat. ”Nice hat” he said. Timing and irony I guess

Zack, it’s hard to believe it has been five years since you passed… I am still in awe of all of the great things you did while you were with us. You live in the front of our minds with many happy memories.

For me, Independence Day is my favorite holiday. No presents, no pressure… nothing more than joyous time with family and friends. Wait… Did That Just Happen???

Lesson learned… no, “I told you so” comments needed.

Earlier this month I was shooting a wedding for one of my favorite couples at a venue right around the corner from my home. I did as I always do… I brought my laptop to back up the wedding images during some of my down time. You have to know how obsessive I am about it… I back up the images 5 times and triple check each one before I erase the memory cards. Again, obsessive, but I am scared to death of losing images.

After the wedding was over, I packed up my stuff and headed out the door, but not before taking a few more pictures.

Fast forward an hour or so… I unpack my stuff to charge batteries, have a Sam Adams, and start the transfer of images to my hard drive system from the MacBook Pro laptop…. except… it’s not there. GONE!… Gasping for air… GONE!

Slowly, it starts to set in what just happened. My first reaction was… “did I back everything up like I always do? ” Yes… thankfully. Well, so I thought. I had every ORIGINAL RAW FILE from NoDo Photography backed up, but there were three weddings completely culled, edited, exported, resized, ready to blog… GONE. I lost every personal picture I took within the last 6 months…. GONE. I lost the last 2 years of my lesson plans from teaching. I lost settings on my laptop… the kind that can be backed up. GONE!

I have begun to get myself out of the hole I created for myself, but not without a heavy price. Namely my sanity from a lack of sleep to get these weddings re-edited. I know what I need to do so this never happens again… but it was a terrible lesson to learn. Jacob… #FAIL

BTW… did I mention it happened on my birthday. My 30th birthday …

Today, like everyday, I ran. Today I ran because work is stressful… like really stressful. The kind of stressful that calls for a stiff drink. There just isn’t enough time to get the things I need to do completed and that frustrates me. So todays run was in complete defiance of the distructive stress that creeps in and attempts to ruin the beautiful weather that makes the green trees glisten, the smiling friends that accompany us in our day to day doings and keep us company, and the everyday tasks you normally enjoy doing… like cooking. Today I ran my lungs off. Burning, aching, and stabbing. My heart pounded like a drum… a snare. Rhythmic and rapid. But I didn’t recognize any of this until after I finished. All I could think about was how perfectly the trees were swaying like a proud parent holding their newborn, the numerous cigarette butts that annoyingly adorned my favorite section of the Yorktown bike path (likely left by teenage punks – yeah, I said that), or the warm Spring air that weaves itself down to your core with all the perfection that God intended.

I am rapidly approaching 30 and I am super excited about it. I honestly don’t remember the last time I was this excited for a birthday. Maybe it’s because it’s a new number, a grown up number that adequately reflects a young man who has a few sporadic grey hairs. Maybe it’s because growing up I always thought 30 was old and I now get to laugh in the face of my younger self. Or maybe it’s because I have had all these dreams of things I wanted to do before I was 30 and now I get to say “before 40.” Whatever the reason, todays run was everything I needed it to be… and I look forward to doing it all over again tomorrow.

The last few weeks have been a world-wind of craziness between weddings in the Hudson Valley and in Connecticut, shoots, track meets, teaching, two funerals, and trying to get in some important family time. Right now I am finishing up Gladys and Shane’s wedding images… be on the lookout for them soon!

Congratulations to everyone who participated in the 43rd annual Loucks Games in White Plains, New York. Images from the day can be found on the Armory Track website including some from the boys’ 800 meter run (which was won with a BLAZING 1 minute and 51 seconds).
